Truthful Tuesday

I may have posted about this before, I'm not sure... But today's confession is that I am the SLOWEST stall cleaner on the planet. Seriously. It takes me like 45 minutes to clean a stall thoroughly. Why am I like that? Shiny's stall is faster for me because she's fairly neat. She poops in a few places, but pees in one and she doesn't drag anything around. Eros, however, is a terrible housekeeper. He poops wherever, pees everywhere and mixes it all around. Basically, his stall gets practically stripped everyday. On top of all the mess, he likes to throw his water buckets around so even the clean shavings in the front get wet. I'm not sure if he likes a damp house or likes to get fresh shavings everyday? Hard to tell. Maybe it's both.

What about you? Are you one of those super efficient people who can clean a stall in five minutes? Or are you like me and it takes a short lifetime? Tips to speed things up?

  1. I average like 90 seconds each for the girl's stalls (they each politely poop in just one corner) and then maybe 3-5 minutes on the boy's stalls (Trigger is usually fairly neat and then Jack makes up for everyone else by absolutely trashing his stall haha). Mine aren't usually in longer than 8-10 hours though, so they're usually not bad! I also don't always get the stalls immaculate each time, there just going to come back inside and poop in them anyway 🤣 I can usually get through cleaning four stalls/dumping water buckets/refilling hay nets in 20-30 minutes, depending on if I need to rebed stalls as well or not. So my mind is actually boggling at the thought of spending 45 minutes in one stall 🤣🤣

    1. Mine are in a lot longer since my turnout situation isn't ideal over here... So I also use kind of a lot of shavings which makes for a lengthy sifting.
But I'm very impressed that you can do all the chores in like 30 minutes! I wish I could pull that off!

  2. i'm one of those people who will sift and sift and sift through the shavings *forever* trying to preserve as much usable bedding as possible while getting rid of the soiled stuff. so... yea, takes me forever lol. tho sometimes when i'm in a stall for ages, then leave to go dump a wheelbarrow or whatever, when i come back to the stall it's like my eyes reset or something, and i'll be like, 'emma this stall is done, stop it' lol.....

    1. omg ok... just remembered the dumbest thing i ever did cleaning stalls recently (when charlie was on stall rest for his injections) -- spent forever making the whole thing immaculate, then left a full bucket of water on the floor (why tho? why didn't i just hang it??) while i filled the second bucket, and charlie dumped the WHOLE THING in his freshly cleaned + bedded stall....

    2. I'm definitely the same way! I want every wet shaving and tiny piece of poo out of the stall! Which is pretty ridiculous given they're just going to make a new mess as soon as they come back inside....
OMG, don't you wonder sometimes why we do these things? Like why? That's awful!

  3. It depends on the day and how bad it is. Jo's pees and poops a lot (and they're elephant sized, so there's a large quantity each time LOL) -- but she's very neat. She keeps it to the back wall and right corner. The only problem is she likes to pull her hay through it when she wants fresh hay and that just makes it even heavier. Plus, we try not to waste any hay -- they made the choice to use it as a toilet, not us, so sifting through that to save as much as possible takes forever. That is a 45-60 minute day. But if she's cleaned up her hay pretty decently, I can get all the other stuff out in about 15 minutes.

  4. I hate when they do that! It definitely makes it worse. My two hoovers that currently live here would never waste a stitch of hay, so at least I have that going for me!

    1. I honestly think it's my only complaint about free choice hay! When I had Promise, every place I ever kept her did like 2-3 flakes 2-3 times a day, so she never left anything behind. I don't know how she would have been with free choice hay -- only experience she had with it was a round bale in the paddock.

  5. When I groomed I could clean a bunch of stalls really quickly, it also helped that my own horse (Carlos) was pretty neat, both Ramone and Dante are freaking pigs tho...
