Truthful Tuesday

Well... L over at Viva Carlos sent me a really helpful video to get the Soloshot up and running. And I was totally successful! But alas.... My computer doesn't have enough memory for me to download the videos. I can watch them on there, but that's about it. Talk about lame!
I've known for awhile that I need to upgrade my machine. I'm working with a Macbook Pro from oh... I dunno... I think 2010. They call it a relic. I've taken most everything off the actual machine and sent it to the cloud. But alas. It's not enough.
I really want to stick with Mac. I like how easy it is to use, and how they tend to be less vulnerable to viruses than a PC. But what I don't like is the price tag. I'm hoping to talk Dad into a new laptop for Chanukah this year... but can I wait that long? I dunno... I'm not really good at being patient.
Does any one know of a way to download from an SD card directly to my ipad? I have plenty of room on that guy. Help a girl out if you do!

    1. No, you need to go through something to get to the cloud. I just got a card reader for the ipad though, so hopefully that will work!

  2. Can you buy an SD card reader for your ipad? I think they're like $15 on Amazon...

    1. Ordered one this morning! Hoping that will do the trick!

  3. They do make an iPad-compatible drive that reads SD cards. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Reader-iPhone-Adapter-Compatible-Required/dp/B07QW4SMZY/ref=asc_df_B07QW4SMZY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=366315397608&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5725991752267137468&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1026734&hvtargid=pla-784198656442&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=74356900537&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=366315397608&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5725991752267137468&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1026734&hvtargid=pla-784198656442

Also, just a warning on the new MacBook Pros, while they are great overall, my biggest complaint is that they no longer have USB ports, so you will need a dongle for any USB accessories. I work on one all day long and it's a royal PITA that they've removed all USB ports!

    1. Yes, they switched to the thunderbolt ports. I don't mind that so much though, easy enough to use an adapter.

    2. Agreed, it's not always a huge deal, but sometimes the adapter just doesn't have enough power to handle certain USB devices!

    3. Ohhh... hadn't considered that! I don't do anything super fancy, so hopefully will be ok.

  4. They actually aren't less vulnerable to viruses - the sample size is just a hell of a lot smaller since PC's/Window OS make up 70%+ of the computers in the world (the whole world).

I've been using Windows machines my whole life and maybe got one Trojan ever back when knew literally nothing about computers (infected floppy disk in the way back times - I also technically didn't own a computer, sorry school computer).

Macs also don't have better hardware/software or anything like that. You are honestly just paying for the marketing. If you decide to go the PC route (which they are awesome) I can always give you some recommendations.

    1. Sorry, you can't turn me back! I was a PC user forever, but the ease of the Macs is wonderful. Also the lifespan is so much better than a pc. My mac still performs really well despite it's age. It's time to upgrade of course, but it's not like the pc's that get super draggy when they get old. So I have to disagree with you on the awesome part. Maybe cheaper up front, but you're replacing/adding on/repairing far more frequently.
My brother is a tech expert for a living so he's my go to for recommendations. But thanks for the offer!

  5. I know you've got an apple watch, iPhone, and iPad. You could get a PC, but sticking with one system is honestly a lot easier. Everything in the mac world is going to work with everything else. I'm biased though because I hate PCs. I second the other comments about the adapter to pull SD onto the iPad. They're pretty cheap and should get you through to the holidays.

    1. Oh yeah no. Definitely not getting a PC. I just ordered a card reader for the ipad so hopefully that will keep me happy until I save up some $$.

  6. I have PC and ipad, iphone, iwatch and have no issues having them all work nicely together. Just dont get a chrome machine that won't work (found out the hard way)/ My husband has mac everything and he even still has is original ibook from early 2000s. Shit all still runs but it is slow. He has a newish Macbook now he uses but he does recording of music. I love my PCS though not a fan of windows 10. THE THING is that the PCS have huge hard drives while Mac is cheap that way (WELL NOT CHEAP THEY CHARGE YOU). Get a PC. WITH A HUGE HARD DRIVE. THen keep your Mac for fun. You will walk out with about 1000 in change for your efforts. not joking. I know Mac people will say I am full of it but Mac is really expensive to me (YOU can imagine the discussions we have at home with Mark Mac and me not) HA Good luck. I love that you got the Solo working though yay!

    1. Lol, I'm gonna side with your hubs on this one. PC's die in like 3 years max. So if I have to buy three over the same 10 years I'll have my Mac... it's not really a cost savings. For some extra $$ I can get 2TB of storage in a Macbook... that should hold me over for awhile.

  7. If the memory card reader doesn't solve the issue, could you use an external hard drive? They're stupid cheap these days. That's where I put my Pixio videos to work on since my laptop is a super basic no space cheap windows model 🙂

    1. Oh that's a good thought! Yeah, that could definitely be an option.

  8. Glad you got the solo shot working... Ah the eternal mac/pc debate!! :-) I have an imac that is 100 yrs old and dying a slow death. I'm loathe to replace it with something, but I will have to sooner rather than later. I've already replaced the hard drive on it once, but I can no longer run any updates so my days with the old girl are numbered. ;-) I'm with you on the mac - there is something about the system and I love my big screen.

    1. See though? That's why I love the Macs! They die slow deaths. PC's last like 2-3 years max and they're basically useless once they hit that point.

    2. totally! And no excuse to lose everything on my hard drive because I have had lots of warning that it is failing! Off to price new imacs now...lol

    3. I'd wait, new stuff always comes out in September!

  9. I've got a 2011 MacBook Pro still going strong over here! It's gotten a new battery, upgraded HD and memory in that time though. Might you be able to just upgrade the memory and HD and keep it going? It was really simple to do (I did it via YouTube videos) and a hell of a lot cheaper than a new one.

    1. That's a good idea too! I'll have to look into it. My brother was always my go to for tech stuff, but lately he doesn't have any time to help a sister out! Very frustrating, I'm going to have to learn this stuff myself I guess.

  10. grrr that's so frustrating!! i'm a pc user so no help here, but good luck!
