Truthful Tuesday: Vacation Foul

Pandemic life you guys. Just when you think it's getting safer out there, the 'rona reminds you it's still in control. As you all know, other than horsing and seeing my pretty immediate family, I haven't done much socializing the past two years. Not only that, but I rarely go anyplace other than my house, the barn, or my parents houses. I'm still having groceries delivered even! Though that's mostly out of convenience and my lack of self control. I buy a lot less junk food when I order online vs going into the store.

Anyway, the point of all that is to note that I'm still being very careful about Covid. I've had all three shots though, and I kind of was feeling like I need to start living a little more. (Though to be real, I'm pretty happy spending most of my time with horses. They are way better than strangers.) I was SUPER excited about taking a vacation this year. I'm very lucky to be in a position where traveling would be insanely safe. We were flying in my dad's plane and staying on his boat. So pretty much no contact with strangers at all. Ideal trip if you ask me. (We did visit the outdoor areas of the resort some, but it was not at all crowded and we were never close to other groups of people.)

So you know what happens? My brother somehow comes down with Covid while we're there. He wasn't very sick, and honestly, we all thought he was being dramatic about having allergies. He took two home tests when he first started feeling symptoms (well one right away, one the next day) and both were negative. So we chalked it up to a man cold, and while he rested in his stateroom, the rest of us enjoyed our time on the boat. We didn't intermingle with anyone outside of our group since our fun things to do were either on our own boat or swimming in the ocean off of our boat and we ate all of our meals on board as well. Outside even! My brother's family continued to have close contact with him though.

Long story short, Covid tests are required to get back in the US, so we all took one the morning we were to depart for home. Sure enough, my brother and sister-in-law both tested positive. (She's had no symptoms at all thankfully.) OY! Fortunately, as of this posting (3 full days since last contact with the carriers) everyone else had a negative test. Even their two kids which is really surprising given they all stayed in the same room. I'm trying really hard to get another test just to be sure I'm not asymptomatic but tests are ridiculously hard to get around here right now. Every place within 50 miles of me is booked up and none of the pharmacies nor walmart have any home tests available. I'll keep trying though! In the meantime, I've only been going to the barn and I'm wearing an N95 while there. No symptoms or anything, so hopefully I'm good!

I guess all we can really hope for at this point is that the virus continues to mutate into weaker strains so hopefully this will get less scary as time goes by. In the meantime, I guess I'll continue to lay low and get boosters when I'm told to do so. Stay safe out there friends!

  1. Oh no 😖 some friends of mine just got stuck in Iceland an extra week after their planned vacation, because they tested positive for covid.

    1. Oh no! I was really worried we'd have to stay. A friend of mine was stuck in Bermuda a few weeks ago due to a positive test, too! Fortunately, we flew private so we were allowed to leave as long as our pilot was willing.

  2. Ugh, hopefully your brother and family only have a minor case and you continue to test negative! We've had a couple of scares here recently, too AND had to travel to Kansas City for a funeral the week between Xmas and New Year's. My test the day after we got back (and 3.5 days since we saw family) was negative and I'm feeling fine. I did go to the barn on New Year's Day for the invite-only ride, while test results were pending, but masked any time I was not in Jo's stall. It was miserable, especially since it was almost 80 that day! But, better to keep everyone else safe with pending test results.

    1. Oh that is hot in a mask! But I agree, best to be safe. Hope you're still feeling well!
My brother really just had a cold, and my sister in law thankfully was asymptomatic all along. And both kids have remained negative. I still can't find a test, but I'm hopeful I'm safe! Still will be wearing the N95 mask until I hit the ten day mark. Just to be safe.
