Truthful Tuesday

Ugh. You guys. I'm so stumped on what to get my dad for Chanukah. Which starts today! Yikes! Fortunately, we usually just lump our Chanukah and Christmas gift giving all into one day so I have some time still. But not that much!
I like to think that I do a decent job of gifting things I know the recipient will love. Friends often come to me for gift suggestions, so I have evidence to back up this claim. Some examples that you guys have to promise not to tell (seriously, these peeps don't read the blog, so make sure they don't find out!): Step Mom has been wanting to get back to riding. I currently don't have a safe beast for her, so I'm getting her a couple lessons and a pair of Regal boots. My mom is a HUGE Hillary Clinton fan, so she's getting a signed copy of HRC's book. (Plus a bunch of other stuff cause she's my momma). My little brother who lives in the wilderness without electricity? Hammock.
But. There's one guy that I just have the hardest time finding gifts for. My dad! The man has everything he could ever want. And his taste is far and above my budget. He doesn't have much in the way of hobbies other than sport fishing. Let me tell you, there is nothing in my price range to get him for THAT.
So what am I going to do you ask? So far I got him a case of his favorite nostalgia candy:

Seriously. He loves these things. But that's not exactly a significant gift. So probably he's going to get the old standby that he gets EVERY holiday (we're talking Chanukah, birthday, AND Father's Day). Yep. 2 Polo shirts and a sweater. So original.
Do you guys have any suggestions for the man who has literally everything? He doesn't drink at all and doesn't golf if that's helpful (I know, not at all).
Do you have anyone really hard to shop for on your list? What do you end up doing for him/her?

  1. Does he ever read? My dad is awful to shop for, but he does love James Patterson, so I usually get him books. Added bonus - I read them when he's finished.

    1. Great suggestion! Unfortunately, he's not a reader.

  2. Ugh. My brother is impossible to buy for. He buys everything he wants for himself throughout the year and then makes up an amazon wish list of like 500$ power tools. No, I will not be buying you a table saw for Christmas. Just no. Does your dad like reading? I get my dad books. I also gave a membership to Audible to someone else. I also think Groupons for experiences are fun. My brother got a race car experience one year.

    1. Nope not a reader, though it's a great suggestion! Good idea about the experiences though, I'll have to check that out!

  3. My parents are generally impossible to shop for except for old stand by items. My dad is into knives so he gets knives 201X every year from me as well as something else. Last year I got him a shirt with a Mr. P iron on applied because he still says Phoenix is "his horse", but this year but this year I have to come up with something else. My mom usually gets a boring pandora bracelet charm. Ugh. I love them though so I try to spice it up!
My mom always says my list of horse related items and a request for clothes is equally boring so I guess it's fair.

    1. I love the idea of adding a charm each year for your mom. That's definitely a special gift. Dad's are just the toughest!

  4. If you're already buying your dad shirts, you could look into some angler-specific shirts. I'm buying the BF some HUK shirts that he likes to wear out on the water because they're UV protective, anti-microbial, etc. HUK has some funky patterns, but I'm sure there are other brands out there doing something similar!

    1. That's a great idea! He mostly wears the shirts with his boat printed on them, but they aren't sun shirts. That's a great idea!

  5. My dad is on the geeky side, so I always try to find strange gadgets and stuff. Such as crank apple peeler, Galileo thermometer, etc. Thinkgeek.com is good.

    1. Oooo! If not for dad, that stuff screams my older brother! I'll check that out!

  6. Uh, is your dad my dad? Mine's only habit is sport fishing too and not only do I have no idea how to shop for it, I definitely can't afford it! Does your dad have a nice cooler? Otherwise I usually end up with black mock neck turtlenecks or giftcards to Charkbait or Melton Tackle.

    1. Yeah he has his fancy built in boat coolers but that would be a great idea! (Also, yes, they might just be the same person...)
One year I got him a really nice dock box, but those last forever so I guess that's off the list for awhile. Maybe I should throw it in the water so he'll need a new one?

  7. My mom is the worst to shop for - 1 she makes like twice as much money as me and somehow has zero expenses. Two she has everything she wants.. I always have to think super hard all year to think of something novel. Apartment Therapy had some guides that I bookmarked for next year (because I'm done already this year) they might have some cool suggestions.

    1. She sounds just like my dad. I stumbled across a Ralph Lauren purple label cashmere sweater at the Saks outlet last night, so that's what he's getting. He best like it as it broke the budget!

  8. I never know what to get my dad either. He lives in CA and we basically only communicate through bimonthly texts. He's a big traveler though and loves to collect shirts from the places he visits so I always make a point to grab the weirdest shirt I can find whenever I go anywhere and save it for Christmas.

    1. Oh that's a great idea! Dad's aren't terribly communicative. I talk to my dad a lot now because we work together, but not sure what that will be like when he retires. Usually if/when he calls it's like a 1 minute conversation.
