Remember when I was all like oh yes we can definitely do walk rides in the snow all winter. It will be just fine! Hahahaha! So cute. Love that for me.
I'm actually happy to not feel like I have to ride in this miserably cold weather.
Not to sound ungrateful, but when we've had long stretches of highs only in the 20's (or colder) and I was boarding, there were a fair amount of days that I really wished I could just skip riding. But when you're in those kinds of barns where you're labeled lazy for not riding everyday, it's hard to justify. Not to mention the thousands and thousands of dollars you're spending for access to that indoor. And so I'd muster up all my gumption and get to it. (When it was safe of course. I didn't ride if it was in the teens, no one did,) But this year? The footing isn't safe so I have a real reason to not do it.
Now there are consequences of course. The horses have already lost their top lines. My scale said something to me that was... unacceptable. But that's all stuff that we can fix. The horses will get strong again come spring. And maybe (fingers crossed) they'll be feeling sounder (looking at you Eros) too. I've noticed Al's patella slipping out a lot more, so that's not ideal for him. But again, come spring we'll get his hind end strengthened back up. And he's probably due for some maintenance too. I've gotten my slightly larger rear back on the treadmill. I can't run because of the knee, but I'm getting a good walk in on an incline for a minimum 30 minutes a day. I've found reading helps the time pass quickly on there. That's a bonus to only being able to walk. You can read on the treadmill at that speed. Two birds one stone since I haven't been reading much lately.
So anyway. That's today confession. I'm not sad about having a little break from riding.

I'm heading toward a break from riding, too. I can still get on and toodle for a few minutes, but The Bump now catches the pommel when trotting lol. It'll do all of my horses good---except fatty Arwen, so she'll zoom around with kids for a couple of months!
ReplyDeleteThat's the best reason for a break! I bet Arwen will have plenty of fun with the kiddos too.
DeleteYeah, snow is only good for 3 rides max. Unless it’s the dry fluffy stuff. Which we never get. But I honestly believe that a break is good for the horses mentally. Mine are able to be turned out so they do get some exercise. For Carmen, I have to move the hay around so she has to walk to it lol. Forty for me I have gym membership and Cordelia needs lots of walks.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely! I think a break is good for everyone. Although after the most recent storm, I feel like only the horses are getting the break!
DeleteOne winter like a decade ago when all I had was a frozen outdoor, we got all gung ho about renting indoors and shipping out a couple times a week to keep in work etc… and it was cool I guess (or was it?) but in the grand scheme of things, ehhhhhh lol these days I’m much happier to just let winter be winter and slow down with it LOL
ReplyDeleteI think I'm just way too lazy to have to drive the horses someplace to ride. It seems like a really big effort.
DeleteTis the season for mental stimulation and body work in stalls/aisles. We're preparing for the upcoming snow here, and I hope we get to play in it before the thaw/freeze cycle makes it truly nasty.
ReplyDeleteYes! All the stuff we can do in the barn is all I want to do after this last storm. It's so cold out there!
